The Cathedral was built in 1912, a year before the Diocese of Brandon officially existed. It is a remarkable testimony to the confidence of the people of this city in the pre-WWI period, when, in Laurier's words, everyone here believed that the 20th century belonged to Canada. WWI took the wind out of those sails, and it was 1924 before a Bishop could be elected to fill the see, and 1951 before the Cathedral lost its "pro-" status, only then being paid for.
