When I had my pre-graduation interview with the seminary faculty, they told me that they had observed that I do not suffer fools gladly. They cautioned me to be aware of this, because it could be a problem in parish ministry. Very wise advice! ... and hard to keep at the same time. (Of course, most good advice contains a challenge, otherwise it's just a pat on the head—and who needs that?)
I have continued to struggle with the fact that many people do not seem to see things as quickly or as clearly as I do, and therefore I am often ahead of the race in debate and discussion. To be honest, there's a bit of ego involved here, and I frequently find myself having to repent of the consequences.
But every now and then I find myself humbled. In the latest issue of the University of Alberta alumni magazine, I read of a woman of the tender age of 23, currently in medical studies, who has already received her Ph.D. in neurosciences, with Gold Medal no less. I'm not so smart after all...
God in God's wisdom has made us all different—"fearfully and wonderfully made," as the Psalmist puts it.
